Soulja Boy is the best thing to happen to popular music culture!

MUSIC CAN BE A BLESSING, AND YET IT CAN ALSO BE SO DANGEROUS! That's why it is so important to listen to the right kind of music. The Pavlovian Method of conditioning reflexes enables evil men to discover secrets of the hearts and minds of men in order to manipulate them for their own evil purposes. Men can be mentally conditioned to respond to a set stimuli like a series of tone signals. Almost like a telephone: You can dial a certain combination of numbers and that keys the equipment to connect one instrument with another instrument.
YOU KNOW SOME OF THESE COMPOSERS WERE INSPIRED! Wagner was sometimes inspired by the Devil, and others like Handel and Mozart, were sometimes inspired by the Lord. It's as though they were really inspired by the Lord or the Devil. Those inspired by the Devil were getting the Devil's message, if they were really tuned in.--And if the hearers are tuned in, they get the message too!
HITLER WAS ABSOLUTELY HYPNOTISED BY WAGNER'S MUSIC! He was getting the message! He was like a receiver for the message and he played the tune. He added the words and the bombs and the bullets to the tune and brought Hell on Earth!

Apologies for the grade-school slam, but the author of this opinion piece is a complete moron. Why a moron? He's ranting about music while simultaneously revealing his utter ignorance of music, music history, and music culture. This is a pathetic regurgitation of an opinion that has never been true, but has been espoused by an out-of-touch segment of every generation in America. So do your homework kid... isn't that YOUR specialty to begin with?

Columnists today: worse or much worse?
This column is a freaking joke. You say the 90s were great, but the 60s needed work? You know nothing.

I agree with the previous posts---and I wonder why you decided to write an column about music when you clearly don't know anything about music. Listening to pop radio doesn't actually qualify you to make statements about which songs are "the peak of the...era."
Interestingly enough, your column is almost the complete opposite of what AllMusic editors said about 2008 on April 3rd in their blog.
"You can talk all you want about the demise of the music industry but all you need to know about the actual music made in the first three months of 2008 is that it was darn tough to boil the list down as far as we did. Nearly 60 new albums and 30 reissues is a truck load of goodness, a musical high that won’t be ruined by the efforts of doomsayers, party poopers and cranks no matter how hard they try. Music is as alive and thrilling as ever in 2008 — check out this list and see for yourself."
http://blog.allmusic.com/2008/04/03/q1-report-we-pick-the-best-of-2008-so-far/
So how many of the albums listed have you listened to? Are you really claiming higher musical authority than these writers, simply because you don't like Rihanna and Flo Rida?

No wonder, this kid is a former Cal undergrad...

So clearly there's a difference between claims about preference (ie I like this song) and claims about a song being good/bad. Obviously, claims about preference, in this case, would probably not make for an interesting column because no one cares what you like. So you decided to write evaluative claims about music. You even went so far as to generalize entire DECADES of music as "good" or "bad." The good news is that you produced an "interesting" column. Unfortunately, it's completely inaccurate. Do your research (and maybe then we'll care about your favorites).

Why is everyone hating on this article? The author clearly has a deep knowledge of musical structure. I'd like to hear all the nay-sayers' opinions on the musicality of lyrics or unsung 90's greats like Nirvana. Not just anybody can judge the quality of an upcoming musical decade based only on the last year's Billboard Top 40 quality. My hat's off to you Ziv.

I find it quite amazing how this individual has managed to pinpoint 2007 as the precise year when music changed from "good" to "bad."
Well done, sir. I think you've got a career in music criticism all lined up.

"The 60s needed some work." Let me get this straight: this writer is seriously lauding the accomplishments of Justin Timberlake and Lil Jon while entirely denouncing the decade that produced the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and many more of popular music's most successful and influential figures.
Was this written by a middle schooler?

Report as: spam offensive Harriet on 5/12/08 at 12am

Yep, the ONLY good music to come out of the 80s was Prince and Michael Jackson. That's probably true.

Writers like this should be excluded from the First Amendment.

What kind of person thinks they have the authority to write such a sweeping, universal evaluation of 50 years of popular music? I honestly can't believe the Daily would publish this.

Report as: spam offensive Steve on 5/12/08 at 12am

This is insane.

This article reads like satire. At first, when I read the title, I figured I was in for another rant about how music nowadays is nothing compared to the '60s or '70s. Which is belief that might be justified. But WOW was I off!
I think other people have made the most important points, but the one question that consumes me when reading this article is "Why?" What made the author decide that he ought to subject everyone to his poorly-conceived opinion on a topic he obviously knows little about? Talk about having no shame. Christ, the source material could have been comprised solely of NOW compilations. I think the vast majority of people I know could have written a more thoughtful and less embarrassing assessment of music. Yet most people have the sense not to use the Daily to say "HAY you guys know what I like?? And you know what sucks?? Everything after 2007. And the 60s. Peace out!"

Report as: spam offensive Ricardo on 5/12/08 at 1am

Guys, we all may disagree about when music got bad, but let's just discuss how University of Cal Berkeley is an inferior institution. I for one think it's exactly nine times worse.

Report as: spam offensive Sergio on 5/12/08 at 9am

Hey Ziv,
Your prose is terrible. Please, if you are going to write dogshit articles like this one, just don't write at all. And I'm pretty sure you posted a self-supporting comment under the handle "Armando." Go back to Cal, embarrassment.
Sergio

oh man this is retarded there is so much good music out there. 2008 is not even over yet how can you say that this is the end of music history! you are an idiot

Report as: spam offensive Armando on 5/12/08 at 12pm

Go to hell, Sergio. Ziv is a great writer, and I've heard he's a really great guy. Everyone always tells me that he's so cool and nice. I think you're just being a hater because you're too dumb to think for yourself and realize how bad Flo Rida is. I bet you think Flo Rida is great. Jealous much?

Report as: spam offensive Estelle on 5/12/08 at 2pm

Armando I hope you're being sarcastic, because if you are, you're funny.

Report as: spam offensive Simon on 5/17/08 at 10am

lol, ziv, i can't necessarily take your post that seriously. but i can see that your school is full of tools. man, you guys are retards, ziv's obviously writing this to piss you off!
