The No. 6 Stanford women’s sailing team claimed the Pacific Coast Championship title in Santa Cruz this week, defeating their closest competitor, Hawaii, by 15 points.

The Cardinal collected 29 points, followed by Hawaii at 44 and UC-Irvine with 50. The A-division team of seniors Caroline Young and Joanna Madsen and the B-division team of sophomore Taylor Grimes and senior Katherine Schlosser finished all but one race in the top three, easily propelling both teams to a first-place finish overall in their respective divisions.

Southern California claimed fourth place, followed by UC-Santa Barbara and UCLA. UC-Santa Cruz and CSU-Monterey Bay took seventh and eighth place, respectively.

Stannard earns first weekly honors

Soccer Buzz named freshman midfielder Kristin Stannard to the magazine’s Elite Team of the Week following her performance in the Cardinal’s wins over Washington and Washington State last weekend.

Stannard took three shots against the Cougars on Friday before collecting a goal and an assist in Stanford’s 2-0 Saturday win over the Huskies. She led the team with nine shots over the weekend and is third on the team with nine points this season.

The Stanford women’s soccer team hosts Oregon State Friday at 7 p.m. and Oregon Sunday at 1 p.m.

Football to compete in front of national audience

The Stanford football team’s Nov. 4 match against No. 3 Southern California will kick off at 4 p.m. at Stanford Stadium and will be broadcast nationally on Fox Sports Net.

The Trojans (6-0, 4-0 Pacific-10 Conference) travel to Oregon State this weekend after a bye last week. The Cardinal (0-8, 0-5) will have a bye this week after being clobbered by Arizona State, 38-3, last Saturday.
